I agree on the firewall... Perhaps he has the option of putting an SMTP out
there in a store and forward configuration. Maybe something like postfix
that is a little bit more configurable than exchange 5.5 SMTP service.

That depends... Exchange 5.5 requires relay for IMAP/POP access. Without
Multiple SMTP servers (one for SPA with Relay, and one for normal SMTP
traffic without relay) you would need a good firewall. Then again, everyone
should have a good firewall.

You can do this operation without employing a firewall. Do you clients send
mail through the SMTP, or are they all local outlook clients?
