[msexchange] Outlook Express/ Exchange Server 5.5 sp4

I have a small group of guys accessing email from the road. They can receive
email no problem, but none of them can send mail (SMTP problem).

Duplicating the problem here; when connecting through a phone line and
updating the mailbox I get an error message: "Connection to server failed".

Can anyone help me out here? This is really starting to get under my skin.
