Rob,
If the Money Talks folder is just inside the my documents folder
and isn't any deeper within other folders, and if the name of this
folder is Money Talks then it's not there. As I said before the
only thing related to Money Talks in my documents is account1.mtf,
and I know that's related to Money Talks because when I saved it
that's where I saved it to.
Do I possibly need to save the account1.mtf file and uninstall and
reinstall the program? And, if I do that how will I get what few
entries I've made so far back into the program?
Troy

Troy:
You do have a Money Talks folder in My Documents; Money Talks
forces this to be so. Where people tend to get into trouble when
one or both of the following two things happen:
1. An account window is closed, either with Alt+F4, by selecting
Close from the File menu, or for some other reason.
2. Money Talks files are saved outside of the My Documents\Money
Talks folder.
Reopening an account window was discussed earlier.
If you save files outside of the Money Talks folder, which is your
choice, you will have to do the following:
1. Remember where your files are. Perfect for advanced users; not
so good if you don't deal with folders/files often.
2. Back up your files yourself, as Money Talks's back up feature is
only concerned with folders it creates. This again, is fine for
advanced users, but a back up feature was requested so often, that
it is obvious that most people should not save files outside of the
Money Talks folder

I've been following this thread with interest in case something
similar ever
happens to me and I have no Money Talks folder in the my documents
folder on
my system, all I find is a file called account1.mtf.
Since I'm new to the program and haven't had a chance to examine
any menus
how do I back up my account?

So, you are using Carbonite, and not the Money Talks backup
feature? Or, did
you use both? I can't imagine what happened to that file,
especially since
you did not save over it.
Are you sure you are looking in the right folder? Try pressing
Windows+R and
typing:
%userprofile%
Then press Enter. Find the My Documents folder and press Enter.
Then, find
the Money Talks folder and press Enter. You should have some Money
Talks
account files in there, and maybe even the one you lost.

Rob,
The register that comes up using the file name I used before my big
flub
only lists 2 transactions.
I compounded the problem by trying to fix it this morning before I
got your
post. It looks like Carbonite had never backed up the file, so
that
possibility is out.
Any suggestions for what to try next would be appreciated.

Margaret:
Though things seem very bad, I think we can pull out of this. In
this case,
it would have been better to not restore a backup, because I am
convinced
your data were still there. If you said no to all of the replace
prompts, no
harm was done.
To your first question, you would probably say no to replacing the
Wallet
(modified).mtc' file, though it probably doesn't matter. .mtc files
are
check templates, and if you didn't modify any check templates since
your
last backup, it doesn't matter if you said yes or no.
Now, to the real issue. If I have this right, you simply tried to
save your
current register as a .docx file. You then deleted the .docx file.
Good
news! This would not disturb the original register, which is a .mtf
file.
Try hitting Ctrl+O in Money Talks, and locating your original file.
Ctrl+O
is just a normal open dialog where you open files as in any other
program,
so you can hit Shift+Tab to look through the file list. If you
don't see any
account files, or you don't see the ones you expect, let me know
and we'll
continue lookking for it.
A Note About Money Talks Registers
I want to talk a little about Money Talks registers and how they
are stored,
because it seems that many people have trouble with this. Money
Talks is
more like other programs than user's realize. Registers are stored
in files
on your computer, similar to the way Word saves documents.
Registers are not
stored in Money Talks itself.
I think the reason some people have trouble with Money Talks
registers is
because when starting Money Talks, it opens all account files that
were open
when you last used the program. This makes it seem like accounts
are some
magical part of Money Talks. This is fine until an account gets
accidentally
closed. The account is still there, but it is not open in Money
Talks, and
thus feared gone forever. When this happens, you can usually just
pick the
account from the recent files list on the file menu, or use the
Open command
to find and reopen the account. You can also stop Money Talks from
opening
accounts automatically and open them yourself, but I doubt most
would elect
to do this.

Subject: [moneytalks] Restoring Register
Hi All,
I've monumentally messed up and hope someone can help me restore
the file(s)
where my MT register is.
I had wanted to try to send part of the register in an e-mail and
think I
chose save as thinking it would be only for the part of the
register focus
was on and I gave it a .docx extension for Word 2007. I got an
error
message that I can't remember and shift-eeleted that file.
Now, when MT loads, Account 1 comes up and while Primary
Checking.mtf is
located in the file menu, it is incomplete and only lists the last
transaction that had been in the "good" register. I'd backed up MT
yesterday before my misadventure and I'm hoping I might be able to
use MT's
restore feature to get back the full register as it was before my
massive
stupidity.
When I click on restore in the file menu and the folder where I'd
backed up
MT is given, I get
Replace File
The file 'Wallet (modified).mtc' already exists.
Do you want to replace this file?
Yes Yes to All No Cancel
and I don't know which to click.
I'd burned the MT backup to a CD several days ago and would happily
settle
for that copy of that register if I can't get the one on the C
drive from
yesterday.
Any help would be extremely appreciated!!!
Thank you,
Margaret
