[modeleng] Re: radius question

Hi there Kenny,

Are we talking about something like this...

http://www.compass-house.co.uk/class37.htm

There are various issues with radius, for example:-

* Do you have flanges on the centre bogie wheels, of are the flanges
reduced in width?

* Do you have nice 'Martin Evans' shaped flanges, or nasty square edged
ones!?

* How much end play do you have on one axle relative to another (including
movement due to the other linkages on the bogie)?

* Probably not an issue, but how much angle can you rotate the bogies
before they start to foul on something?

* Are you looking at track that has any kind of gauge widening on the
curves?

* Are you wanting to travel round the curves at a nice speed, or
dead-slow?

To be honest, I'd be tempted to get out a piece of old wallpaper, and draw
out some curves on the reverse, and start marking out where your bogies
and wheels would come and use this to work out what kind of radius you are
looking at.

Note if you don't mind sticking a few pieces of paper together, you can
use Powerpoint to draw out a couple of massive circles of the right kind
or radii, of which only a small part will fit on the page, but it is
enough to give you a pretty accurate representation of the track.

Yours,

Rich.
PS Don't forget as your track radii gets smaller, your loco will struggle
more and more to haul things round the bends.
