Forget aluminium. Hell would freeze over before you would get a boiler
certificate.

Incidentally ever tried soldering aluminium to base metal? Not as easy as
it sounds. There is a way developed in WW2 on aircraft to connect radio
aerials to the aluminium frame of aircraft. Essentially you spread a film
of oil on the aluminium and then scratch the surface under the oil with a
very sharp point and intensively. Do not uncover the area. You then melt
solder onto the oil and it sinks through to the surface and with
manipulation forms a solder base on the aluminium. Wipe off the oil and
solder on you aerial wire etc. Use motor oil as apparently the chemicals in
motor oil assist the process.

Works like magic.

Hi,

I am new to model engineering and have a question re boilers. Is there any
problem building a working steam boiler for a 2" or 3" scale traction engine
completely from Aluminium. I have a good supply of all sizes for very little
money. I am hoping to build the complete model almost entirely from ali and
not paint it. Not using prototype just building from scratch. I can solder
and weld ali so the joints are not a problem. Ali can withstand high
pressures so is there any problen doing it and getting a boiler test
certificate? All help and comments gratefully received

  Julian Harrison.
