You can burn almost anything, but the air-fuel ration may need altering,
plus the grate area may be too small for some fuels.
Many traction engines and a few trains, burnt wood, or straw, among other
fuels.
My 4" traction engine had an oversized firebox as I planned to burn some
wood as well as coal, and that worked OK.
At the start I had problems getting enough air in when burning wood, and
this is a common problem.

Getting back on line,topic that is. You mention the use of pellets for the
slow combustion wood heaters. Has anyone over there or elsewhere used them
in a loco boiler? I keep going to try them due to a char shortage but
