[modeleng] Re: [modeleng] Re: Pistons was 3½ vs 5, Sweet Pea

Once upon a time, in days of yore, crossbows were pulled back into the
firing position by a cord tied around the waist and leaning backwards with
the feet holding the arms of the bow against the ground. This act was called
"spanning" the bow. Some bright spark invented a device with a square shaft
which was rotated to do the same thing, and the tool that fitted the square
shaft was called a spanner.

OT I know, but I couldn't resist sharing it with you.

Harry - did you mean a c spanner?

Cheers,

JohnP

Al,
Yes, it's kind of a security fastener, but also a low-profile
fastener. There is a name for it, I just can't recall it at the moment.
Also, spanner (UK) = wrench (USA). Originally I think both terms
referred to tools with a fixed opening (like a crows foot or box end
wrench) but so far as I know, there as here, the term covers any
spanner/wrench, and it doesn't specifically describe what I'm talking about.

Regards,
Harry
