[modeleng] Re: modeleng Digest V5 #114

For most of us that are old enough to remember steam in everyday use, I
suspect that our personal favourites will be those that were familiar to us
"back then".
Although I had a choice of lines, most of my train spotting time was spent
on the (ex)LMS, GWR, and Metropolitan lines. Even then, I was not fond of
the LNER or Southern lines or locos.
Getting several fooplate rides on GWR locos made them the favourite for me.

Having said that, the GWR had a massive following, and as many detractors.
Their publicity was superb, (perhaps only matched by that of the Southern
under Walker), their designs were advanced for their time, and their
engineering was to a high standard. Also, they turned in profits throughout
the majority of their existance.
That they made few advances in their latter years, that the engines were
complex for what they did, and that they became old-fashioned post war, are
just some of the complaints against them that could be sustained.

Thank goodness we all have our own likes and dislikes as it gives us the
wode variety of engines and models that we now see.

I'm not sure if this mail will work. Apologies if I have done it wrong.
John,
It was a 15xx that inspired me to one day become a model engineer, all-be-it
in 5" Speedy guise. When at school there was one displayed in a local
ironmongers shop window, to which I was drawn on numerous occasions.
I still haven't built my first locomotive, but it will almost certainly have
the 'clutter' of outside valve gear. That for me is part of the beauty of a
moving steam engine.
I had the pleasure of visiting the NYMR last week and it was great to see
the motion work of the A4 and of the in steam '5' and Standards.
