[modeleng] Re: king tender colour

On the SVR and I think all other preserved railways, a gloss varnish is used
over a satin or matt paint. This gives the engines a wonderful, easy to
clean finish. The smokeboxes go matt and then are cleaned with a paraffin
and oil, if cold, or a cylinder oil if hot to get a shine. When the loco
gets towards its overhaul, the paintwork has usually deteriorated and then
is cleaned all over with paraffin and oil. Until this time, a dry wipe or
wax polish is used.

I am not sure what the preserved engines have, but it was either matt or the
satiny (is that a word) finish that one gets when wiping matt paint with a
mix of oil and paraffin, which is what they used to do.

Chaps
The uppermost part of my King tender now needs paint and its obviously
black, but should it be Matt, Satin or Gloss. The only pictures I have are
black and white so that's no help. Does anyone on the list have a definitive
answer?
Kind regards,
Richard H
