The belt paste used to be supplied in a round stick, about 2" in diameter in
a paper tube. It was black, quite hard and VERY sticky! I have not seen
this for 60 years.
You held it against the rotating belt, and the friction melted the stick.
This immediately increased the grip of the belt, and for a while, made a
squishy noise. The pulleys were 'crowned'
to keep the belt central. A line shaft ran numerous machines, with a
lever on each machine to move the belt from the 'loose' to the 'fast'
pulley.
There was also a little clamping device, which drove the steel 'lacing' into
the ends of the leather or fabric belts, which were then connected with a
piece of round gut.
Fractional motors were very expensive before WWII, often costing as much as
a cheap lathe - hence the use of a single motor and line shaft, or when
there was not an electricity supply, a small steam engine, gas engine, or
diesel to run the line shaft.
Oh my, all of this was happening in my youth!
Cheers! Hubert
