Hi Clif,
I've used wiper motors for lots of jobs as is by fitting a sprocket in place
of the arm and using a chain drive to the item to be driven. You can also
install a flex coupling and drive things directly. Lots of torque and
reasonable slow to medium speed for driving various things. Some may be too
slow for locomotives. They of course run at 12VDC for cars, which is great
for powering them by ex-car batteries. A small computer fan also at 12VDC
can keep them cool in enclosed spaces.
Valeo SWF in Germany make a wide range of wiper and other motors new, and
have lots of info on them on their website. They are available at various
electrical supply houses worldwide, the list is on their site at
www.valeo-swf-motoren.de
As a side note, in my work for a large photocopier firm over many years, we
used various Valeo SWF worm gear motors for jobs like lifting heavy
multi-ream paper trays into position for feeding, and folding sheets in
booklet makers.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Jeff Dayman
