Ahh, here is where you can get confused.
British Standard Brass is 26 tpi. 27 used to be for Gas-brass pipe thread <I 
believe now obsolete>, and 28 is BSP.

As for "foolproof", given a big enough spanner, I am sure any of them can be 
made to fit any other!
