They did it so folks couldn't easily connect gas to water etc.

You cannot make anything fool proof no matter what you do. There will
always come along a bigger fool and he will manage to bypass your best
efforts at fool proofing. I designed a safety feature at the sawmill and it
would shut down the scrap chipper feed belt if something went wrong. Fool
proof? Not on your life!! The night time operator called me and said the
chipper had choked up so I had to go down there to supervise clearing it out
. I told him that it should have shut itself down if a problem occurred and
he said it had quit, but he found that if he held the "Start" button in with
his finger, the belt would continue to run! Nope not fool proof. Closest
thing to fool proof fittings is the left hand thread used on acetylene
equipment, but I bet somewhere, somehow, a fool has managed to defeat that
device also.
