Hello Julian,
My father made me a couple of simple but interesting
working boats many years ago and maybe one of these would do.
First was a submarine. Carved solid wooden hull, (18 inch long)
weighted with lead to just positive bouyancy. Transverse drillings fore
and aft for simple hydroplanes made from galvanised wire soldered to tin
scraps. Power from a rubber motor (aeroplane rubber) linked to a simple
bent tin prop. This was capable of about 20m submerged range and gave me a
lot of pleasure.
Second was a paddle steamer. Simple solid hull cut from thick plank.
Pair of paddle wheels soldered to galvanised wire running in wood bearings.
The clever part, and I am not sure if this was his idea or not, was that the
boat would paddle upstream. A long fishing line was attached upstream to
a bridge or end of fishing rod. The other end of the line passed through
a fairlead in the bow (staple) and was secured to the centre of the paddle
wheel axle. In action the paddles would be revolved by the water and the
steamer would gradually wind itself upstream.
Both these models could be made rather quickly and require outside testing
which could be an advantage.
Hope this helps
Dennis
