[modeleng] Re: are ye all trying to tell me something...

will check the shaft tomorrow but can't remember anything on the end of it..
Not got C5 gearbox. If need to I will build my own. It only needs to deliver
all the torque at revs necessary to turn the crank at a reasonable speed as the
traction engine gears will be working.

Would it be possible to swap you for the shaft of yours if it is fully
intact. There's a very thin bit at the end that is vital to C5 operation
and normally removed when doing anything else with them.... I've got
several C5 motor shafts that are missing the end very thin bit (I've got
several C5's).... If you are going to remove it anyway I'd appreciate
being able to swap for it.... You're going to have to strip the motor at
some point anyway because the rotor will be tarnished (I've owned C5's
for years, believe me the copper they made those rotors from tarnishes
whether it's being used or not)..... I wouldn't use the C5 gearbox
unless you have to as it is all plastic and a bit rubbish......

The C5 motor is a very high torque motor. I managed to get hold of this
on for twenty quid from a bkoke who did not know what it is worth. The
guys on robot wars will buy any C5 that comes up for sale just to get
the motors.

I intend putting a worm drive on the spiggot and possibly buildong a
small gearbox of two or three gear wheels to give the crank some welly.

I wonder if a C5 motor will be powerful enough for the task.
Someone here has some experience of them and may comment.
I suspect that you may be surprised at the power required to run a 3"
scale
traction engine. At least, to run it in a comparable way to steam
powered
engines.
Of course, far less power wouldbe required if you only want to drive on
firm
surfaces.

We don't use soap anymore it's now handwash.

Whats wrong with electric? I am considering building a engine in the
region of 3" scale. It will have all the bells and whistles of a steam
traction engine but not steam. I plan to drive the crank and hence
everything else with a 12v motor from a Sinclair C5.
