I believe that there was a system called a 'man engine' in a tin mine in  
Cornwall which worked in a similar manner but in this case the up and down  
motion was connected in some way to the beam of a pumping engine.
As I understand it there was this long rod which hung down the pit and was  
shackled to the beam. At intervals down the rod there were small platforms  
which rose and fell as the rod moved. The procedure was to get on a rising  
platform and step off as it reached a stationary position on the side of  the 
mine 
shaft then step back onto the next platform up as it dropped down  to you. 
There was an accident which killed many men, I assume that one of the  
shackles holding the lifting rods broke.
My father who lived in Cornwall knew about it but would never believe that  
anybody would invent something so crazy.
