In the big papermill at Wickliffe, Kentucky there is a power boiler about 11 
storeys high.  While on a tour of the boiler installation I noticed that 
there was a flat belt running continuously up through a 3 foot square hole 
in the floor and down through a similar hole right behind it..  The belt had 
platforms and hand holds on it every 10 feet or so and was used as a man 
lift between the floors.  No, I didn't try it out!
