Hello Ron,
                I have been on a couple of man lifts in US papermills  which
consisted of a vertical belt with footholds and handholds.  As one came to
the required floor one simply stepped off sideways and backwards.  Descents
were handled by another series of foot and hand holds on the  downgoing side
of the belt run. The clearance hole through the floors was not that great
and the whole system took some getting used to. There was a notice
forbidding the carrying of toolboxes and that  a safety switch stopped the
belt if you forgot to get off at the top floor.   Did this system  ever
exist in the UK ?
