Hi Julian,
Why put the motor at 90 degrees? I would have thought that it could be
mounted traversely somewhere about the firebox position.which makes the
drive and gearing easier. Toothed belts are a good drive although you have
to watch the wrap around factor to make sure that you have sufficient teeth
in engagement.The experts reckon that they should not be used where you have
a large reduction ratio as in the event of overun they can strip teeth off
the belt but I have been running some for 10 years in locos and never had a
belt strip yet.
