A crankshaft on a full size engine will turn at between 150 and 300 rpm.
I believe that a common speed for agricultural engines when governed is 160
rpm.

Have not yet fully considered the designs for transmitting the power but
your point re worms is totally valid and I agree would not be practical in
this instant. rotation will have to go through a gearbox and probably some
form of diff to allow the transmission path to be 90 degrees to the motor.
Can anyone tell me the usual maximum revs of a crankshaft on a traction
engine so I can plan the reduction my gearbox will need from the motor. I
intend using as few coggs as pos. I may even build a belt into the
transmission somewhere.

Hi Julian,
You cannot use a Worm drive as they do not allow for overun. i.e As soon as
you removed power from the motor unless you are stationary, the wheels would
try to drive the motor and as a Worm will not drive that way, either the
wheels will lock solid or something will break
