[modeleng] Re: Work in progress

Hi Harry,

I assume you are going to stick/arc weld or MIG weld the final part onto
your silver soldered assy.

If so, the arc might just pass over the solder if it's just a thin joint at
right angles to your weld. However if the whole job gets red hot after
welding a while the solder might soften. If you do only a short weld at a
time and let it cool between, it should be just fine.

NOTE : You mentioned this was a smokebox saddle. No problem to mix welding
and soldering on such low-stressed parts. However on a frame or boiler or
other highly stressed part I would say you should never cross a silver
soldered joint (or soft soldered joint either) with electric weld. The
reason is that the weld in that area will be contaminated with the silver
solder and will be a weak point in the weld. You are doubtless aware of
this, as an experienced builder, but I mention it for beginners who might
get the wrong idea.

Good luck, Jeff Dayman
