Ok just to be different.
My benches are made of steel with 3mm sheet ontop. I then have used carpet
over the steel with one section of carpet that I can quickly lift off when I
need to get back to a steel surface. (eg when I am using oily things). Other
than that I just put some paper toweling down. So far I haven't had to
replace the carpet. The carpet is a very short pile type that came out of
somewhere and is still going strong.
At least things don't slip and slide on there and there is less chance of
small bits and pieces being knocked off the bench as they tend to grip to
the carpet.
Thats my two bob's worth.
