Barrie,
     In the USA melamine plastic laminates of the type used to veneer
kitchen countertops is available in flat sheets up to 60" x 144".  I have a
couple of workbenches made of solid core wood doors over which I have laid
sheets of light-colored laminate, without adhesive, and that has made a
superb work surface.
