Andy,
This is not true - I drive the evidence round our club track most Sundays -
right hand side leading!
I recall running round the same track double heading with "a certain
gentleman from South Wales" immediately behind me. The sight of two Winson
engines running together drew gasps of astonishment from many club members!
We ran quite successfully until bits began dropping of his loco and he had
to retire to the steaming bays. I met him several times, he was apparently a
decent geezer but his frequent use of a hammer resolve "minor problems" on
his loco were a bit of a worry!
I think the problem with running a three cylinder engine on the outside
cylinders is simply the need to reaarange the quartering of the drivers to
90 degrees. If this is done I can't see any serious problem apart from the
obvious one of reduced power.
