Andy,

Bill Conner of Shelbyville, TN makes articulated riding trolleys that have
no springs at all. The entire set of several cars is equalized by a system
of rods and levers and it works very well. The lack of springs causes the
cars to be very firm with no side to side rocking as can occur when springs
are present. Bill also makes those little vertical boiler beam locomotives
that can be seen all over the USA these days.

Hi Jesse
The springing is done by rubber "bushes". These are held in tapered cones
and have a "washer" with a curved nose that squeezes it as weight is
applied. It actually works very well and gives a surprisingly compliant
ride. I will put a sketch up of the arrangement so you can see how it works.
As a result the whole wheel set is free to float and thus aligns itself
axial to the track on curves hence the reason it is referred to as being
'self steering'
