[modeleng] Re: Where are you all?

Well, I'm back from the Australia/ New Zealand experience, and from the
following business trip to Italy. Got a lousy cold, though, and suspect it
was on the flight back from Oz.
Met Tel at the zig zag railway: we spent less time tehre than planned, as
we would have been waiting in the dark and cold on a platform with no
shelter for 2 hours. But there at Clarence was this VERY distinguished
looking gentleman in his bowler hat, who proved to be Tel. We have photos
(or rather Lynne does) if someone has somewhere to host it. Thanks Tel, a
pleasure to meet you. just a pity it's not allowed to send you black
pudding! Heartily recommend the zig zag railway for anyone visiting Oz.
Also got taken to the 2ft 4in gauge Puffing Billy line near Melbourne.
Trains in NZ were interesting. Started as we unloaded cases from the taxi
in Auckland when a woman in uniform appears, asks if we are going to
Wellington and promptly helps to take the cases to the train. The views
are soemthing else. On South Island, it's very scenic run down to
Christchurch, and the TranzAlpine over the mountains is very impressive.
Especially from the cab - I was invited to cab ride the diesel up to the
summit at Arthur's pass.

Shantytown, just down the coast from Greymouth has a couiple of old lococs
- one from Avonside, one from Dubs. There's a heritage park in
Christchurch with a line on part of teh trackbed of NZs fiorst railway,
and steam there. We both had invites to cab ride. Signal box visit no
problem - just ask! Interested that signal box levers ar totally different
colours to UK practice.

But the kiwis just can't make tea! it's so weak it can't think about
staggering out of the pot! Speight's beer isn't bad though.

I have a couple of days at home: then it's back to the meetings round. Now
done 54 flights this year, and have at least 14 more to do.....
