[modeleng] Re: What will happen to your equipment?

Hi Alan

I shall turn 80 next year, and this problem has been exercising my mind over
the past few years. I want to keep my workshop intact until I am unable
to use it, through shuffling off this mortal coil or by going gaga! Our
son is not inclined towards engineering. Then my daughter solved the
problem by a late marriage to an engineer, who is enchanted with the idea of
inheriting the contents of the workshop. Problem solved!

To briefly change the subject: Over the past couple of years I have been
constructing a small, but heavy, lathe from large lumps of cast iron. I
have finished the headstock, saddle, and cross-and-topslides. Last week, I
mounted the lathe on an old Myford stand, created an 'underneath drive' with
a 3-phase motor on the shelf below, with a poly-vee belt drive. The speed
of the motor is controlled by an inverter.

The great moment arrived, and I switched on the motor - the mandrel ran
sweetly on its taper roller bearings, and Oh Joy! the tool cuts well, giving
an accurate result with a fine finish. I am chuffed!

Now that the concept is proved, I will happily spend the next year or so
finishing off the lathe.

Cheers! Hubert
