[modeleng] Re: Welding loco frames to buffer beams (Rob Roy)

I've regularly MIG welded frames (and even platework) together albeit on
rather larger and sturdier locos than a Rob Roy. I think LBSC recommended
brazing Tich frames. I've had no problems at all. I've used a simple butt
joint rather than slotting too. Obviously you need to be sensible about the
welding and not just run one big fat weld or it'd distort. If you treat it
like welding a car running short welds and letting cool down between welds
you'd not have any problems, I think. Another thing I do is to MIG braze. It
is not really acceptable for automotive use and I have a lot of problems in
melting the copper welding tips but it gives a strong joint (possibly even
stronger than welding) with little distortion.
