Hi Ron,

Any electric welding method generates intense local heat, so some distortion
is likely. Sometimes you can tack weld alternate sides when starting and
stagger the beads etc to minimize the distortion. With experience you can
sometimes preset the plates in relation to each other at an angle to end up
square after welding. Preheating will also reduce distortion.

You could preheat before MIG, but why not just braze or silver solder them?
