For (model) stays and piston rods I've never heard a discouraging
word, however as Jan-Eric Nystrom can attest (J-E are you here?) there are
hidden metalurgical problems fabricating an entire boiler from Monel. I'd
seen all sorts of references over the years to monel being a "probable"
good material for model boilers (strong as stainless, solders like copper,
etc, but costly) but none had been built so far as I knew, until now. It
has turned out to be a case of attractive in theory but a failure in practice.
