Well here I am replying to a list that Tel says I can't reach.....

What about freezing the cork? Maybe even saturating it with water and 
bung(!)ing it into the freezer.

I'd guess a really sharp tool withloads of top rake and tiny cuts (but hurry 
up before the water melts!)
