Even the mention of Kyanising will produce fits in H & S and environmental 
people these days - not that that in itself is that hard to do. It's insertion 
of the wood in a solution of mercuric bichloride: it also subsequently causes 
severe corrosion in steel fastenings in the wood.

I still like the creosote+ oil myself, but one of the best alternatives 
is tanalised timber.
I dont know if you can buy the fluid to do it yourself, but may be worth 
looking.

Kyanising was another good wood treatment, that may also be available still.
