No! You want the current to flow only when the alternator is MORE positive
than the battery or the battery/load combination.

You have to have a motor that will not take more than the alternator can
supply except for short transient loads.

That is like asking how long is a piece of string. Alternators are built to
provide different output currents depending on their use. There should be a
plate giving voltage and max load current.
