That still holds true over here as well Tony, despite Gondwanaland being
metricated for the best part of 30 years the common hardware store bolt is
Whitworth.

Setting up in metric from the start is probably a wise choice - you can
always add the odd BA size if & when you need 'em. I have a pretty
comprehensive range of tackle for; BA, Whitworth, Metric, BSB, BSP, ME (40 &
32 tpi) UNF and UNC as well as a few 'odd bods' for special work.
Accumulating them just take time and money - nothin' to it. Also, you will
quickly develop the 'eye'.
