I bought a set of "economy" taps and dies off the net over 5 years ago. A
full set of ba threads cost I think, 15uk pounds. I am still using the same
set and, touch wood, I havn't broken one yet!! I found the set by surfing
the model engineering suppliers, I can't remember if it was Chronos, Tracy
tools, Proops or whatever, it's a long time ago and there has been a lot of
the falling down water and black pud consumed since!!!!!
I suggest you shop around, maybe wait till you can get to an exhibition,
(thats how I got all my metric stuff!!!!!), there are usually bargains to be
had if you look. I have found, as long as I use plenty of cutting spray,
(Rocol in my case), I get decent results and cannot complain at all.
Dave.

Subject: [modeleng] To BA or not to BA, that is the question.
As I get all of my bits and pieces pulled together for my first practical
machining exercises, I have noticed that all of the nut and bolt sizes on
the various plans are BA's. As these plans are all quite old they probably
predate the modern metric taps and dies that are all I have. Is there any
reason why I should not use the nearest metric equivalent, or should I save
up for a set of BA ones please? I have just been on Tracy Tools' web site
and they have a 0 to 10 BA set of taps for £18 and the matching set of dies
for £20, plus another £5 for the correct tapping drills, which comes to £43,
plus another £8.60 in post and packing. I am not overly mean but I can buy
an awful lot of metal to machine for the total cost of £51.60! This assumes
that I will not need any for 11 and 12 BA, which would be extra.
Thanks in advance,
Tony Wells.
