Subject: [modeleng] Titanic Model
I quote from today's Daily Telegraph:
'The first model of the Titanic to be built from the ship's plans has=20
been
unveiled with a =C2=A31.3 million price tag.
The 1:48 model is a replica of the White Star liner that sank 96 years=20
ago with
the loss of more than 1,500 lives.
Made from brass, wood and fibreglass, it took seven years to build and=20
relied on
plans, drawings and measurements from the liner.
It was the first time that the plans had been released, and the Harland=20
and
Wolff yard in Belfast worked alongside Fine Art Models, a modelmaker=20
from
Michigan on the project.
The model is 18ft long and features a hull made of fibreglass with=20
brass
plating, held together by more than 3.3 million rivets.
Each bulkhead on the 1,500lb replica is positioned just where it would=20
have been
on the 882ft, 46,328 ton liner, which cost =C2=A31.5 million to build 100=20
years ago.
The decking is all made from wood, as is the deck furniture, also=20
crafted to
scale.
The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, when it struck an iceberg as it=20
made its
maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.'
The newspaper has three pictures, which are, unfortunately not=20
displayed on The
Daily Telegraph web site. My scanner is temporarily out of order. =20
When it
is fixed, I will send the pictures. If anyone has today's Telegraph,=20
it
appears on page 12. If you have a scanner, please send us the=20
pictures.
Cheers! Hubert
