My father warned me many years ago to not let ashes pile up against the
bottom of the grates in our coal furnace. He said it would burn out the
grates in short order so I have always been careful to make sure the ashes
were away from the grate bars in my Shay.
Jesse the alleged machinist in Troy, TN.
Peter, the fire bars were made by me to a design by my previous boiler
maker
who saw them on a traction engine, the theory being the dead ash protects
the bars from the fire.I make them but I have to pay to have them welded.
Couldn't you get someone to copy them & meanwhile cut out the burnt bar &
replace it?
