A proper adjustable spanner always has the faces tapering inwards slightly
towards the opening to prevent the spanner from slipping off the thing you
are tightening/loosening.
Try using your verners to measure the opening of your 'footprints', 'king
dicks' or 'snap ons'.
A sign of a cheap adjustable or one that's been overloaded is that the
jaws taper outwards slightly (or greatly) towards the opening.

Rich.
