I would think the three flute tap would be stronger. I use almost only two
flute spiral point taps myself and they are the strongest of the lot by far.
Two flute taps almost must be guided by a tapping fixture as they are hard
to start freehand, but the additional strength and free cutting makes them
worthwhile. To be correct, spiral point taps are intended for auto-tapping
machines and holes should be drilled through the workpiece. However, if
holes are drilled deeper than necessary, there is no problem. I just
recently tapped over fifty #1-72 holes in brass and broke nary a tap. None
of those holes were drilled through, but I did use a tapping stand (or
guide) to keep the taps straight.
