Hi All
The guidelines for Tig welded copper boilers are already in the boiler
testing guide for the southern fed. It is simply treated as a silver
soldered boiler. The only difference being the need for either a coded
welder with documentation, OR for a test piece to be available for
examination to prove the welders competence (which is exactly the same as
for steel boilers) I.e. you do not have to be a coded welder to manufacture
one, just a competent welder.
Tig welding is a very accurate and precise form of welding, well suited to
this kind of work. The only limitation I can see is getting the torch into
some of the tighter areas! It does save heating the whole boiler up for
silver soldering and then also the pickling process.
As a club boiler inspector with experience in designing and manufacturing
pressure vessels in both steel and stainless steel (usually TIG welded
construction) I'm very glad to see the technology being utilized and
accepted in the hobby.
Regards
Craig

Hi there Alan,
I'd be curious to know what the Southern (or Northern) Federations view
point is - will they issue boiler certificates for them, and will the
testing still be one hydraulic test every four years?
Yours,
Rich.
