[modeleng] Re: TIG welded copper boilers

Tel,

You must be younger than I thought.

When I was a young apprentice at one of our country's foremost engineering
companies (Metropolitan Vickers), I recall spending some time in the
Fabrication Dept. where all types of welding were carried out, some of it
for Nuclear Plant. When I asked if copper could be welded I was told that it
was impossible and always would be! I think the "reasoning" was that the
thermal conductivity of copper was such that heat was conducted away from
the welding site so rapidly that it was not possible to obtain sufficiently
high temperatures.

But, times change, the huge Metrovic's site has been bulldozed, and fullsize
steam locos have their copper fireboxes repaired by welding.

Regards,

Barrie
