Hi Tim,

Can you get a grip on the filter?
You could try using one of those gadgets that plumbers use for gripping taps 
without damaging the chrome.
They consist of an adjustable rubber strap which tightens as you twist , 
some go under the trade name of Boa.
I think that the Patent must have run out on the original Boa name, as you 
can now get other brands.
They are pretty useful and I keep a couple of different size ones in my tool 
bag.
It might enable you to get sufficient grip on the filter to turn it.
