[modeleng] Re: Storage

Alan,

There is a product in a spray can made by LPS in this country that will coat
the metal with a nice rust resistant coating that will last a year or maybe
forever and Petrol or Kerosene will remove it easily when you get back home.
WD-40 will not work so don't even try it as a rust preventative for the long
term. It is OK for a short time, but not in the long haul. It will
probably remove the LSP type stuff too if you desire. We used a product at
the aluminium mill to coat mill rolls in storage. It was called "Rustban
392" and made by Exxon, I think. I bought five gallons to spray on our
sawmill machinery after the mill burned down one time and it did a great
job..'Course, I have no idea what you can find in GB that is similar to
either of these products. Our climate here in the southern US is very damp
and humidity is quite high, but the Rustban 392 kept everything ready to use
in the new mill. Actually, the LPS product has the same odour as Rustban
392 so must have the same active ingredient.

There are coated paper products with Vapour Phase Inhibitor on one side and
this stuff is great for anything you can wrap up in it. The paper is dry,
but gives off a vapour that coats the metal and we used that at the
aluminium mill also. Looked like Kraft paper with a dull white coating on
one surface. Just lining a clean and dry toolbox with the paper (white side
toward tools) should keep the whole box full of tools from rusting. For
models, just wrap them up with the coated side toward the models.

You not going down to Oz to visit Terry are you?
