Hi Jesse
The most popular steam oil on the preserved railways over here is Castrol
Cresta SHS (see the Castrol website for a data sheet). This is a pure
mineral oil, but some steam oils are based on vegetable oil and these can
certainly "go bad". In fact, when emulsified with water, they smell
disgusting!
