[modeleng] Re: Steam loco configurations

Tony,

The single axle trailing truck under the cab or firebox of 4-4-2s etc. is
indeed fastened to a "Y" shaped "towbar", but the actual load is carried by
a set of rockers in most cases. In the ones I have looked at, there is one
of these rockers on each side of the loco and they allow the truck to shift
sideways when passing around curves. The rockers are located right over the
axle box on each side. As to the 4 wheel trailing trucks as used on Hudson
class 4-6-4 locos, I don't know how they operated. I have a huge book on
locomotive design from the 1800s, and I don't know if it shows anything as
regards two axle trailing trucks or not, but I will check and see.
