[modeleng] Re: Sparks

Alan,

I use stainless steel mesh sold to me by Bruce Engineering many years ago.
He had done some tests at night with a video camera. The mesh has worked
just fine on three engines.

Incidentally I think the term, "Spark Arrestor" is a misnomer since they do
not arrest sparks. Indeed there is no need to arrest sparks - they don't do
any harm - we have all put our hands in the sparks from a sparkler on
bonfire night? (Sorry guys, all in the U.K.). These devices are there to
prevent incandescant cinders from being discharged from the chimney.

I was pretty sceptical about these things until we had a nasty accident on
our club's portable track in which a glowing cinder went down the neck of
some poor little girls dress. Fortunately one of our guys was an ex
ambulanceman and was quick to limit the damage. We immediately made it
mandatory for "Spark Arrestors" to be fitted and have had no problems since.

Barrie
