Harry et al,
Fwiw, when I do tapers, I hold a small sine bar to the side of my 
compound with a
strong magnet, and indicate the bar in by running the carriage back and 
forth.  I have
rarely had the luxury of a taper attachment!  The side of my compound 
has been surfaced
true to the travel, btw.
