[modeleng] Re: Soluable oil

G'Day Ron,

I'm glad you replied, and described what I expected would happen. How cold
does your shop get? Is it a constant cold, or is it an overnight cold?
I haven't tried different concentrations, as I have used only "sulphated
neat cutting oils" from the moment I brought my machinery up from where I
had them stored. After the first winter here, I realised that I was looking
at problems with soluable oils. I still find it hard to believe that I'm
40Km from Perth (Western Australia) as the crow flies, and it gets this
bloody cold! In Perth, you're lucky (or unlucky - depends on how you look at
it) to get a frost, and, to have your water pipes freeze solid is unheard
of. I suppose that's what you get for living at the bottom of a valley high
up in the hills....

To prevent rust from consuming my machinery in a single winter, I drape
plastic tarps over them. This slows down the airflow over the machine, and
greatly reduces condensation forming of the machines as the air heats up. I
could run a small globe under the tarp to help keep it warm, but they would
have to be on 24/7 and then give me a nice power bill. The drill press seems
to be the only thing that doesn't seem to be affected to any great degree.
Beats me why......

Oh, with the tarps you should never tie them of, as you will trap moisture
in it. Sort of, defeating the purpose....

Cheers,

Phill.
