Hello Harry,
I have done this job more than once and I don't envy you. I've never managed
to find any clever tricks and have simply annealed the straps and formed
them by bending over whatever comes to hand until they are a reasonable fit
on the door. Presumably you are going to paint the door in which case a few
marks wont be too much of a problem. I've usually riveted the straps onto
the door - just like the real thing.
Oh, and don't forget that smokebox door hinge pins were simply dropped in
from above, they didn't have a great big ugly nut on their bottom end to
assist gravity and friction in preventing the pin from coming out!
Good Luck!
Barrie
