[modeleng] Re: "Smoke Rings" - Comment

HI All,

I stopped my subscription to ME years ago and have never bothered with EIM.
ME lost it's way and EIM seems to be only interested in serialised epics
that go on forever or how to make products sold by advertisers.
In the current edition of EIM, which I had a look at because it porported to
have an article on automatic signals and it is totally useless. Firstly the
article is in two parts, the writer who admits to knowing nothing about
electrics, uses an electronic circuit designed by a friend, had the
components soldered up by a specialist Electronics company and doesn't even
give a circuit diagram for it. So how is anybody supposed to gleen useful
information from the article other than to learn how to connect wires
together, or is it simply an advert for the modules? Not exactly technical.
Most model engineers are capable of soldering a few electronic components
onto a Vero Board if shown the circuit.

I think that years ago the ME could have been saved if only they had dug
back into their archives and re-published in the current magazines some of
the old stuff. There is tons of technical interesting stuff hidden away in
the old magazines which a lot of the modern model engineers have never seen
and would still be interesting for the current generation.
I can remember an article years ago on Steam Operated Drain Cocks with the
dimensions for most gauges which would still be applicable today and another
on the dimensions for Swindon Draughting dimensions in the Smokebox, which I
still use.

When I stopped my subs to ME I used the money instead to purchase back
volumes of the magazine and it has provided far more interesting reading.
